We are a nation that is determined, young and with a clear vision, thanks\nto His Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman, The Crown Prince and Prime Minister\nof Saudi Arabia.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Steve Wylie, Vice President of Black Hat Cybersecurity Marketing Group,\nsaid it was a huge honor to be back in Riyadh following the success of last\nyear\u2019s inaugural event. \u201cI was so inspired seeing a vibrant cybersecurity\ncommunity here,\u201d he said. \u201cThis gave us the confidence to rebrand the event to\nBlack Hat Middle East and Africa.\u201d This year, Black Hat is celebrating its 25<sup>th<\/sup>\nanniversary, and throughout this time, it has maintained a strong relationship\nwith the global cybersecurity community, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The first day\u2019s highlights included a host of different activities,\nseminars, talks, demonstrations and much more. The event has quickly\nestablished itself as an attractive destination for industry leading experts in\ncybersecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Expert opinion and inspiring talks <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Frank <a>Abagnale<\/a>, the renowned cybercrime and\nfraud prevention expert and the inspiration for the Hollywood movie \u2018Catch Me\nIf You Can\u2019 told delegates that the type and frequency of cyberthreats was\nincreasing. Phishing attacks whereby the hacker employs social engineering to\ngain access to sensitive information were on the rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no technological way to defeat social engineering apart from\neducation. However, I can go onto almost any company, building, home or\nlocation and find soft spots that hackers can exploit,\u201d he said. \u201cWith just\nyour date and place of birth a hacker has 98 percent of the information they\nneed to steal identities. That\u2019s why you should always be very careful about\nthe type of information you put on social media.\u201d He advised people to pay for\npurchases with credit cards while being aware of individuals or organizations\nthat ask for money immediately or request information from them at some point,\npotentially months after first getting in contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Neil J. Walsh,\nRegional Representative for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in\nEastern Africa, joined Brenno Andrade Silva, Head of Cybercrime Unit, Brazilian\nPolice for a panel session on legislative environment and cyber diplomacy with\na geopolitical focus. The panel was moderated by Betania Allo, Cyber Attorney,\nCounter Terrorism from United Nations. During the discussion Mr Walsh said that\nthere was a general misconception that cyber-crime was a problem in the West.\nIn fact, there were high levels in the Middle East and Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">By learning from\nbest practice around the world and applying these insights in other countries, businesses,\nindividuals and governments will be far better prepared to deal with the issue.\nHe attributed the current difficulties to a lack of human capacity and limited\ntraining and exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fun activities,\ncompetitions and workshops<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors on the\nfirst day also got the chance to enjoy a Capture The Flag competition organised\nin collaboration between Black Hat MEA and SAFCSP. The contest brough together\nover 1,000 participants including 50 of the world\u2019s best hacking teams as well\nas amateurs to strengthen their ethical hacking skills related to the Web, PWN,\nForensics, Reverse Engineering, crypto and more. This year it was run in a\njeopardy-style for both the qualification and finals with a prize of 700,000\nSAR prize fund up for grabs at the end of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The public got\nthe chance to take part in a lock picking competition where they are given 35\nseconds to pick as many locks as possible. Those taking part were first taught\nhow to do so during a workshop being run as part of the lock picking village in\nthe activity zone. Multiple rounds are being run everyday during the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The conference runs from 15 to 17 November at the Riyadh Front\nExhibition Center and features more than 250 exhibitors and over 200 speakers\nthis year.
