,<\/strong> Huawei and Tianjin Port have jointly collaborated on a driverless, zero-carbon “vehicle-cloud synergy” horizontal transportation solution. Huawei built an intelligent horizontal transport system at the terminal of Section C in the Beijiang Port Area of Tianjin Port. The project has achieved Level 4 autonomous driving, enabling 76 Intelligent Guided Vehicles (IGVs) in a fleet to collaborate efficiently. Huawei used cloud-based centralized dispatching to increase port-wide efficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n As hubs of global supply\nchains, ports play a critical role in promoting international trade.\nTraditional ports rely on humans to operate container cranes working under harsh\nworking environments, are labor intensive and suffer from workforce shortages. These\nchallenges hinder the rapid development of global sea transportation. Therefore,\nport automation and intelligent reconstruction have emerged as the industry’s\noverarching goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ports worldwide are going through a process of\nautomation driven by the latest technologies like 5G, Cloud, and AI. A typical\nport deals with vessel arrivals and departures, shore-side operations,\nhorizontal transport, yard operations, manual tractor-trailer transport, and\ngate operations. One of the key steps in port digitalization is automating\nhorizontal transport that handles cargo within the port. Currently,\nconventional horizontal transport faces three major challenges: harsh working\nenvironments, safety risks due to driver fatigue, and inefficient manual\ndispatching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Huawei’s intelligent horizontal transport\nsystem has five key advantages. First, it offers global path planning. Huawei\nhas designed a global path planning algorithm based on vehicle kinematics, which\nensures that individual vehicles stay on their path. The algorithm enables\nmultiple IGVs to make turns smoothly, whether traveling in one or both\ndirections. This is the key to safe and efficient multi-vehicle cooperation.\nThe solution also features dynamic short path planning on the cloud, responding\nto many terminal operations and adjusting tasks in real time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The second advantage is its high-precision\npositioning. Huawei uses BeiDou, 5G, HD maps, and roadside sensing assistance\nto assure high-precision lane-level positioning. As a result, 90% of quay cranes\nsuccessfully align on the first try, significantly improving operational\nefficiency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Third, Huawei developed the MDC intelligent\ndriving platform. The upgraded Huawei MDC offers automotive-grade assurance,\nincluding ultimate computing power and long service life. It also simplifies\nO&M by providing standardized hardware. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The fourth advantage is core system\nintegration. In addition to core service systems such as TOS, Huawei’s\nintelligent horizontal transport system can quickly interconnect with other\nperipheral service systems. With Huawei’s intelligent charging dispatching\nalgorithm, IGVs are charged at the best possible time, preventing interruptions\nto fleet services. Using Huawei’s intelligent intersection dispatching\nalgorithm, ports can preset intersection traffic policies to ensure proper\naccess by manual tractor-trailers and autonomous trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fifth advantage is cloud-vehicle\ndecoupling. Huawei decouples the cloud from vehicles through an open ecosystem.\nAs a result, the solution can support a wide range of intelligent driving\nvehicle models, making it more cost-effective and easier to promote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the event of an IGV fault, an operator can\nremotely take over operations. The service takeover rate for a regular\nautonomous driving solution is about 5% to 6%. For Huawei’s solution, it’s less\nthan 0.1%, ensuring safer operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n IGVs rely on 5G networks. Huawei performs\ndynamic short-path planning to ensure that IGV paths never cross each other. This\nprevents collisions even if the network is abruptly disconnected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Intelligent, horizontal transport must meet\nthree conditions. More than five operation lines must function simultaneously\nto support large vessels, while the system should be able to also manage\nlarge-scale fleets. Furthermore, it must support dispatching in complex port\nscenarios.
