The agreement was signed on the side lines of the Future of\nDesalination International Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The agreement comes six months after\nboth companies signed a collaboration agreement to develop a roadmap for HID\nacross ACWA Power\u2019s projects. The latest agreement will involve the\nimplementation of a pilot project that includes HID in the Gulf Cooperation\nCouncil (GCC) region, following research that has demonstrated that the\ntechnology has the potential to break the 2.0 kilowatt per hour (kWhr) barrier\nof energy consumption to produce one cubic metre of water from seawater. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Energy consumption in desalination\nplants is also referred to as the total specific energy consumption. HID\u2019s\nresults indicate a step change against the most energy-efficient commercial seawater\nreverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination facilities, which consumes approximately 3 kWh\/m<sup>3<\/sup>\nand more than 10% improvement compared to the current Guinness book record for\nan SWRO pilot plant of 2.271 kWh to produce a cubic meter of water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cWith continued industrialisation\nand demographic growth, water consumption across the world continues to rise at\na rapid rate requiring urgent solutions. The potential emanating from water production utilising\ncost effective, low carbon-intensive technologies is truly exponential and we\nare proud to pilot the ground-breaking HID technology, which is\ngoing to be a giant step forward in revolutionising the desalination industry,\u201d\nsaid <strong>Paddy Padmanathan, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, ACWA\nPower. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Total specific energy consumption is\na metric that has a direct impact on the operating costs of a desalination\nfacility. For private companies that operate in the same industry, desalinated\nwater is sold to governments on long-term contracts over a fixed tariff. In\nACWA Power\u2019s case, the company has found a direct relationship between\nreduction in tariffs, and reduction in energy consumption. This means that a\nreduction in energy used to produce water will result in lower tariffs for\ngovernment tender purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u201cWith its low energy footprint, HID\ntechnology has the potential to lower operational costs for our desalination\nbusiness, which we hope will lead to lower tariffs in the long term. For\ngovernments, this means that it is more affordable to produce water. For\ninvestors, this could mean higher profits per facility. And for communities, it\nmeans that they are getting usable water with the least impact on the\nenvironment.\u201d <strong>he added<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">A demonstration project is expected\nto be completed by 2023. If the project demonstrates the same outcomes in using\nless than 2kwhr\/m<sup>3<\/sup>, then ACWA Power will have the lowest rate of specific\nenergy consumption in producing desalinated water from seawater in the GCC\nregion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;Technical readiness tests\nconfirm that the capacity of HID to break the 2kWh\/m3 seawater desalination\nthreshold, opening a new paradigm in the industry&#8217;s efficiency levels. WGA&#8217;s\nindustrial development roadmap objective aims to complete advanced technical\nreadiness levels by the end of 2023 and commercialise HID by 2024.
