{"id":103883,"date":"2024-11-18T17:05:46","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T14:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/indexeconomic.com\/?p=103883"},"modified":"2024-11-18T17:05:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T14:05:46","slug":"women-filmmakers-push-the-envelope-in-storytelling-through-powerful-themes-of-universal-resonance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/indexeconomic.com\/?p=103883","title":{"rendered":"Women filmmakers push the envelope in storytelling through powerful themes of universal resonance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a name=\"x__Hlk75875331\"><\/a><b><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"en-AE\">Women filmmakers at 2024 Ajyal, presented by Doha Film Institute, are pushing the envelope in filmmaking through compelling stories that explore themes of universal resonance.\u00a0 Three important voices from the region, supported by the Institute, shared their creative journey\u2019s at the Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"en-AE\">Among the women filmmakers at 2024 Ajyal, Hind Meddeb, who helmed this year\u2019s opening film,\u00a0<\/span><b><i><span lang=\"en-AE\">Sudan, Remember Us<\/span><\/i><\/b><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0(<\/span>France, Tunisia, Qatar), says it is a tribute to the poetic soul of the Sudanese revolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;I witnessed the Sudanese movement from its beginning, and I wasn\u2019t afraid because I found myself in the midst of it,\u201d said Meddeb, during a media briefing at 2024 Ajyal.\u00a0 \u201cI have witnessed the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, but the most beautiful revolution was the Sudanese revolution. It was powerful because art exploded with the revolution, and our young people talked to the world through my camera.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">She said that the Sudanese were isolated from the world following several years of repression. \u201cThe Sudanese used poetry in their protests against French police brutality, and when I went to the country, I discovered that poetry has evolved as a national phenomenon. Poetry is a matter of life or death for the Sudanese today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a name=\"x_OLE_LINK1\"><\/a><a name=\"x_OLE_LINK2\"><\/a><span lang=\"en-AE\">Meddab said the idea for\u00a0<i>Sudan, Remember Us<\/i>, started when she was working on her earlier documentary,\u00a0<\/span><i>Paris Stalingrad<\/i>\u00a0which featured a young Sudanese poet who came to Paris as a refugee. \u201cThe refugee centre was under my house in Paris. I was shocked at the French racism towards them, and I got to be close friends with them. They encouraged me to go to Sudan and bring back images of the revolution since they couldn\u2019t go back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">And what<span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0sets Sudan&#8217;s revolution apart, says Meddeb, was its distinctly progressive character.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI saw women in the frontlines of protests and unlike other revolutions in the MENA region, there was no gender harassment. Sudan is a post-Islamist society. They reappropriated their Afro-Arab identity and value their cultural, linguistic, and tribal differences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"en-AE\">She said the film\u2019s title references &#8220;Azza,&#8221; a powerful symbol in Sudanese poetry represents the nation itself through a woman who used to recite poetry to her imprisoned nationalist husband through his prison window\u00a0 &#8211; a testament to the longstanding relationship between poetry and resistance in Sudanese culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Director Marjan Khosrav, whose film\u00a0<b><i>Requiem for a Tribe<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Iran, Spain, Qatar) depicts the story of a woman in Iran who is pressured to settle in a city, also said the film\u2019s story was inspired from real life. \u201cI met a woman crying for her children who moved from their hometown in the mountains to the city. This woman loved her heritage, culture and arts and was upset that technology hindered nomad people from practicing their arts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"en-AE\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Meryam Joobeur, the director of\u00a0<b><i>Who Do I Belong To<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Tunisia, France, Canada, Norway, KSA, Qatar), said it is important to take out the geo-political aspect of violence that is happening to dissect the cycle. \u201cIt is universal, and it is happening everywhere, so if you want to change the world, you should start with oneself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">She said that after the Tunisian Revolution, the change created a sense of fear of the unknown. \u201cThere was extreme liberation and its counterpart in extreme religiosity. There are still questions, but I think the situation has become more balanced.
